What is the future of energy efficiency for buildings? We keep hearing things like "Net Zero" and "Electrification" thrown into the conversations now as we talk about energy efficiency and sustainability. What do those even mean? What do they entail? What can we be doing to prepare ourselves for the future of energy codes and the future of our buildings? Let's take a look at the different meanings associated with Net Zero as well as all of the different aspects of an all-electric building to understand what might be coming and how we can begin to prepare for it.

Lighting systems and their controls play a large role in the energy efficiency of a building.  This class will look at Section C405 of the NM IECC to understand the role of electrical power and lighting in building efficiency.  We will also look at the U-Factor Alternative path of compliance through the energy code and determine if any of the lighting requirements will change using that path vs the Component Performance Alternative path, with the common compliance verification tool - COMcheck.

Is advanced framing and insulation the smarter strategy of construction and a contributor to our energy efficient future? Explore the concepts of advanced framing for commercial buildings and how this practice may impact the way the building community designs for the future.  The use of advanced framing provides more opportunity for various forms of insulation to have an impact on the building energy efficiency in ways that have not been presented in traditional construction. This class will cover the various forms of traditional and nontraditional insulation and how they perform in various conditions.

We’ll use pictures, videos, code books and plans to understand the concepts of advanced framing and how to apply them in practice.
